| no partners | | White Tank regional park offers many trails for exploring the mountains in the area. I have been here a few times and tried some of the short hikes.
On this day I was taking my son in the kid backpack so our trip needed to be short. We decided to make an out an back hike out of the South Trail and Goat Canyon Trail.
The South trail starts from, you guessed it, the Southern most parking lot of the park. This trail is very flat and easy. After about a mile it intersects with the Goat Canyon Trail.
We decided to explore the first mile or so of the Goat Canyon Trail. I'm glad we did because once you merge onto that trail the hike becomes much more interesting. The Goat Canyon trail crosses a few washes, one of which consists of pure white rock. Eventually the trail starts to climb and head back deeper into the White Tank mountains. We climbed for about .5 miles and then decided to call it a day and head back.
Overall, the South Trail did not impress me much. However it serves as an optional starting point for the Goat Canyon trail. My feeling is that they put it there to create a nice loop hike out of the Goat Canyon trail and this one. I did not encounter any Petroglyphs either while hiking on these trails. If you want to see those stick to the Waterfall Trail located North of the park visitor center.
For those wanting to hike in the park without driving a vehicle into the park, this is a good place to start. If you enter the park with a vehicle they charge you $5. However if you park outside the park and hike in I believe the fee is only $2-3. If you park outside the park this trail head is the closet one once you enter the park. |
