| no partners | | After attempting Peak 2212 (off-trail isn't my A-game), I hopped on one of the Verrado trails to see where I'd wind up. Got some great views of the mountains. Ended up next to some sort of overgrown quarry, or whatever it was. Also walked a for a few minutes on the eyesore service road that heads up the side of the mountain. It too was overgrown, and blocked off to vehicles by some boulders. I thought I could follow it up to the higher peaks without running into any workers as it was virtually abandoned, but Google Earth tells me that it meets up with another road, which is probably still in use.
Walking back along the road, I payed most of if not all of my attention to the surrounding scenery. The terrain was pretty smooth so there was no need to look at the ground. I heard some movement in front of me and jumped as I usually would, only this time, the movement was followed by rattling. Without any thought, I leaped to the opposing side of the road and saw a rattlesnake fixed in striking pose. Tried my best to get some decent pictures, but I didn't feel like shortening my 10ft distance. |
