| no partners | | Hiked the traverse from Ventana to Esperero. I encountered snow even before I reached Maiden Pools, and by the time I reached the Grinding Holes the trail was completely covered in snow. Hard to believe I hiked the same trail less than a week ago with absolutely no snow!
As I worked my way up trail past the Ventana/Esperero junction to the ridge the snow became steadily deeper. By the time I reached the window I had gone through some drifts that were up to my knees and I was covered in snow. However, the trails course is defined by the ridge and route finding was not difficult.
After a short break at the window, I began to work my way along the ridge towards Esperero Canyon. When I reached the small campsite before the drop into the canyon I took a left and headed to the top of Window Peak. The route was easy to follow, but the last part where you have to climb up the rocks & trees was made difficult (and a bit dangerous) by the amount of snow and ice.
After bagging the peak I returned to the trail and dropped into Esperero Canyon. The snow quickly began to decrease and by the time I reached the junction with Cathedral Rock the trail was visible once again. By this time the midday sun was beginning to get to me, and I did my best to hike the remaining miles at a quick pace to meet my ride at Sabino Canyon. |
