hoodoos".
Joe was right. This was the longest
9.5 mile hike I've ever seen! Figure
on climbing till you can't climb any more,
and you're probably about halfway up.
Then you go down for awhile and do it all
over again some more. How can this be
fun you ask? I don't know, adrenalin,
endorphins, deranged from altitude sickness,
whatever, but it was a blast!!!
Kidding aside, this is a very strenuous
hike, but definitely within reach for a
conditioned hiker. The trail is fairly
defined and well cairned with the exception
of some sketchy sections right in the
middle. When confronted with a decision,
we tended to stay high which I feel is a
good overall policy, but not without
exception. If you can determine the
most traveled path or see a cairn, go with
that. Although really impossible to
get lost, you could lose valuable time
foundering around.
It took us nine hours and I felt we kept up
a very respectable pace throughout.
When I had the feeling we were really
chewing up some distance, we would stop to
check our maps and it was like NOT! I gotta
a real problem with my mapping software
showing this thing as 9.5 miles. From
my personal experience it seems much longer.
I have been on some bushwhacks that slow you
to a crawl - this is not one of them.
Aside from some slowing for steep climbs and
to navigate through rough sections, this
hike moves right along for the most part.
At a total of 9.5mi, we did little better
than 1mph. Oh well, we're a couple old
guys and we suck. I can live with
that.
As far as Hieroglyphic Canyon being an
escape route, I would seriously consider
selling my house to pay for a chopper before
I attempted the wicked descent into that
canyon. Enough said - don't get hurt.
The day we went it was 85F in the valley.
I wouldn't want to do it if it were any
hotter. I went through my entire
115oz. of water.
This is a really awesome hike I think I will
want to do it at least once a season if not
more. |
