Known as the "Paris of the North" it has more bars and restaurants per capita than any other city in Norway. A large city for such a northerly location, the 50,000+ residents are able to go to the northernmost university in the world, and a host of other northernmost things. It's location north of the Arctic Circle means that the sun does not set between May 18 and July 26, something which I was able to experience while I was there. Similarly, morketid (the dark time) occurs November 26 to January 15. Nonetheless, winter is big tourist season in Tromso, as it is one of the primary spots on Earth to experience the Aurora Borealis. (I'll catch that next time!)
I'm putting up a bunch of photos from around the city, a 4-hour cruise in the fjords as far north as Skjervoy, and the midnight sun as seen from atop the adjacent mountain Storsteinen, 421m (1381ft) above the sea.
Fun Fact: The all-time record low temperature in Tromso is -4F, which means that despite it's location in the Arctic, many places in Arizona can get colder! |
