I got a new GPS (eTrex20) and spent most of Saturday morning playing with it and loading maps...and so despite a late start I thought I'd head toward Turret Peak for some recon, leg stretching, and GPS field work.
So I took the Bloody Basin exit from I-17, headed east, and eventually set my sights on a minor nearby high point - Goat Peak. I turned north on FR44, about 13 miles in from I-17, and went just a few hundred yards before parking and walking the jeep road.
After half a mile or so I crested the low ridge and Goat Peak swung into view. I stayed on the road until it looked favorable to contour around to the south ridge. Of course the contour had some ups and downs but it works just fine. The bushwacking was not bad at all though expect some scratches. The terrain gets steeper and the dark volcanic rocks near the top slow progress, but overall its a pleasant ascent with fine views from the top. I didn't see a register or a benchmark...just an old summit cairn partially covered by a very sticky bush. Coming down I stayed on the "ridge" all the way to the jeep road - that's a little better route. |
