Headed north, crossing paths with a small coyote, until I crossed Willow Canyon, where I headed offtrail up the Canyon proper. It soon narrowed up, and the boulders grew to mostly compact-car size, with a few RV's thrown in. Nice white granite(?), but the surface was polished smooth, and the footing was a bit on the slippery side. Some bouldering required, with one 20 foot vertical wall that I had to hike around to the south in order to proceed.
Arrived at Willow Spring 2 hours later, which was only a 100 gallon puddle, with not even a trickle from the springs overhead. The birds were having a field day, mostly from the smaller spring on the lower south wall. Last time I was here, the pool was easily 5000 gallons, with a beautiful small waterfall. Timing is everything.
I took the "Willow Canyon Trail" to the "Mesquite Canyon Trail" on the way out, and was back at the Taco in 1:15. |
