The early start, the cloud cover, and the fact that the west facing canyon/draw doesn't get direct sun till later in the morning made the hike bearable, even in July. The Siphon Draw "bowl" only had a small puddle of water, despite the recent rains. As usual, the views from the Flatiron were beautiful. It was the first time I've been up there since the plane crash in Nov. 2011. Checked out the crash site. A little memorial plaque has been erected along with a few impromptu silk flower/stuffed animal/photo memorials. Only very small pieces of the plane left, but the blackened rock tells the sad story all too well. We didn't hike up to the peak this time (an additional 15 min. or so hike that I generally highly recommend), as my wife was pooped, but after checking out the crash site, I wandered out to the tip of the point on the "north" side of the canyon, directly across from Flatiron. That was a very worthwhile side jaunt as well, and offered both an impressive view of the Flatiron as well as additional views to the north and east. Ran across a dozen or so hikers on the trail, which was more than I expected this time of year.
