The Kings trail, also called Mamalahoa Trail, was built between 1836 and 1855 on top of the lava crust and extended around most of the island. Along the section of the trail in Waikoloa you find a field of petroglyphs.
The Waikoloa Petroglyph Field has one of the most concentrated areas of petroglyphs on the island. Found in the middle of a lava field was a place where visitors had to wait before crossing a border. Therefore they set up some rocks in C shapes as wind breaks and they also chipped in the petroglyphs. There were a lot of the same types of petroglyphs, so I'll just post a few photos to give you an idea of what is there. |
