Not just because I got to pull off a real good surprise appearance for some friends at the summit, but because it's just a super cool hike! Paul and Pam were headed up to do some peaks and friends from SAHC, the Caley's, were already up there. We drove up and camped not far from the trailhead on Nellie Creek Road. In the morning we drove up to the trailhead at the end of the road, and saw the Caley's vehicle, so we knew they were ahead of us. As we neared the peak, we could see David and Johanna up ahead. Knowing I wanted to surprise them, Pam and Paul went ahead and engaged them in conversation. I lowered my hiking hat and walked on up past them as they talked, trying to look as inconspicuous as possible. It worked; they didn't identify me! I went up a short ways, and turned around. I could hear David say, "Hey, didn't that guy look a lot like Randy?" To which Paul and Pam replied, "Yeah he sure did." I stealthily moved in and said, "Hey, that's David and Johanna!" It was a perfect moment!
Following the hike we drove to Lake City, then over to camp at the Silver Creek/Grizzly Gulch Trailhead. The rest of the group was going to hike up Sunshine and Redcloud the next day, while I was going to head back to Tucson. This was a brief trip for me, just two nights camping and one peak. Certainly not the recommended way to spend some time in an area after such a long drive! But that was a decade ago; I don't have that kind of energy anymore. Still a wonderful memory though! |
