| no partners | | | My wife and I headed for Corvallis, OR, for the month of July to escape the summer heat in Phoenix. We took separate paths to Oregon. Sue drove with our daughter and the three grandkids through Calif stopping to see friends along the way. I decided to explore a path we had never taken before driving north from Las Vegas to Elko and then heading west to Winnemucca before turning north into Oregon. I car camped along the way. Around 5 pm I would start looking for a dirt road or jeep trail leading off the highway for several miles towards a likely camping spot. This worked well - I always managed to find a quiet secluded place to camp with great views. On the second night I found a campsite at the north end of the rugged Ruby Mountains beside a small brook (Krenka Crk) lined with Aspen trees. I liked this area so much I spent two nights there and took a 6 mile day hike up into the Ruby Mountain Wilderness. The mountain sides were lush with wild flowers and traces of the winter's snow drifts remained near the tops of the mountains. The canyon bottoms were covered with thick groves of Aspens. I flushed two huge mule deer with towering antlers along the top of a ridge while on the hike. That night I was woken up by a skunk like creature who chirped a cheery hello as he sauntered by my tent in the moon light. It was a mountain oasis in the middle of the vast Nevada desert. Then it was on to Oregon. |
