So, I was in Ohio -- state of my birth (beat Michigan!) -- to see my nephew race USF2000 at Mid-Ohio. After making my plans, I found out my friend Johan would also be racing World Challenge there, which was a nice surprise. As a bonus, the Indy cars would be the main event. I started looking around for something near the town we were staying in -- Mt. Gilead, as everything near the track was sold out -- and saw the state park a mile east. I found a .pdf map ( http://parks.ohiodnr.gov/Portals/parks/ ... arkmap.pdf ), and used that to lay out a route I thought would be about 3.5 miles. The woods are so dense there, that I could not trace a route using MapDex satellite view, so when I got there, I winged it. Hard to get lost, anyway, as the park is maybe one square mile.
Turns out the .pdf map scale is not accurate, and if I had done the full route I planned, rather than cutting it short -- first USF2000 practice was at 0930, and I had to make sure my wife got the "breakfast" part of the bed & breakfast experience -- I would have ended up walking about twice as far as I planned.
It was a nice, if muddy, walk in the woods, marred only by the constant traffic noise from US 42 and Ohio 65, which the dense foliage did little to alleviate. |
