| no partners | | My trip to Joshua Tree did not start out too well. The south entrance was closed and so was Utah Road (North Entrance).* Mecca Hills was closed off too, and I did not feel like going to Northwest section again, so I decided to southern entrance on foot and look for sidewinders. I stayed up the first night looking for sidewinders until 2am and slept until 6am to look for more. Then I planned to sleep during the day and then repeat this at night. Unfortunately, it was hot and sleeping in my sweat is not something that I mastered. The flies did not help matters either, so I decided to spend the day in Julian and road cruise for snakes at night on the way back to Joshua Tree.
Julian was cool - a rich, artsy historic town with mom-n-pop shops, orchids, hippies, and retirees whose ancestries appear to be from the Caucasus region (that means they're all white folks). Anyway, Julian is a great place to take a nap. I could not sleep tho, so I decided to hike Volcan Wilderness. It was okay, but mid-way though the hike, my body start to shut down, and I slept for 2 hours. On the hike, I saw about 12 turkeys. I took photos, but the photos were awful and not worth posting.
I did not see any snakes on the road to Joshua Tree. That night, I went herping again at Joshua Tree and only found 1 baby sidewinder around 5am and called it.
*Before you ask, yes, I did check Joshua Tree's website for the road conditions before I left, and it stated that the road at the south entrance was open. |
