| no partners | | The plan was to descend the full length of Rider, including the technical upper section described in Todd Martin's Grand Canyoneering book. But a mile or so down I hit a long, narrow corridor with lightly flowing water, deep pools, slick downclimbs and no obvious bypass. The guidebook didn't mention this section and since I was without drybags or wetsuit, I decided to retreat and do the standard route into the lower canyon instead, a very fun hike with outstanding stretches of slickrock, narrows and some tricky scrambles around pools. The canyon mouth and beach at the river are also very nice.
The road in has many sections that are pretty rough, took about an hour each way, including one wide wash to cross with deep, soft sand. |
