| no partners | | Today was Friday... Friday was Saturday. In regards to hikes, that is. Friday was to be shorter, easy exploratory. It was not... instead, longer and a bit more demanding than I was set for. Saturday was to be longer... harder. It was shorter and far less demanding.
After the booming, blustery storm last night, I had doubts about the exploratory up and around Hershberger Peak scheduled for this morning. The mud over in Dry Canyon is legend; I did not really want to encounter it immediately after a hard rain. And... I was wondering what shape I'd be in after the too long hit on Friday.
Fortunately, the other hiker cancelled... I was left to my own choice and I chose to check out that nasty looking drainage that topped out at what might be a cave... a mine...? I knew it would be a day of getting sliced and diced: big time overgrowth with little chance for a clear route... plus hyper steep to boot. The benefit: close to the car and short; I should be back early.
I was back early... but with numerous surprises. There was a trail; a good trail!
The slot below the cave was not the vertical monster cliff it appeared to be from down low... it was a narrow defile that allowed access all the way up to the cave. And, it appears I may now have a shortcut looping potential for the return from upper Pock Rock Canyon (still need to check that out).
I did not explore the cave. The six foot ledge, overhanging, just slightly exceeded my limit for solo scrambling, especially after yesterdays too adventurous scramble... left for another day.
So... a nice morning out! |
