| no partners | | I'm surprised that none of you bird-nerds don't go to South Florida (SoFlo). This whole state is a bird scantuary. I can see why you Altitude Addicts don't come here, because you wouldn't know what to do with yourselves and probably would get lost.
The Everglades is the most endangered park in the US and the 3rd largest. There's only one Everglades in the world. There's no other ecosystem like it anywhere else. It's only 6000 years old and has more biomes than Grand Canyon. Most of the people who come to the Everglades seem to be European or from Down Under. If you are looking for an excuse to come to SoFlo, chances are that you have some older, retired relatives that live in Florida that can use the company. Old folks love to tell stories and probably won't mind hearing your long, drugged out, exagerrated hiking stories that border on fiction, which leads in to my story...
So, I went to the Everglades with the mom, who retired out here like every other mom north of the Mason Dixon Line. She and I drove the road and hit a few trails spotting wildlife, which is quite easy here. I managed to see 4 of the 5 Everglades Big 5 over the years, which consist of 1) Florida Panther, 2) American Alligator, 3) American Crocodile, 4) Florida Manatee, & the one that I need to see, 5) Burmese Python. I found two spots that looked promising for Burmese pythons, but I'll have to get there via bike to bag one. I also could see one on the road, but road cruising the Everglades has not been successful for me. I invited a few friends that live in Florida to help me hunt for some pythons in the backcountry next time I come out, but they did not want any part of it, so I'm just going to invite them on a bike ride instead. 
The pics should be able to fill in the gaps of this story. I also snorkeled at John Pennekamp State Park and was able to see a good-sized Black Tip Shark and saw a few things, but I don't have an underwater camera, so no pics on that side trip. |
