| no partners | | The Routeburn Track is located at the southern end of the South island of New Zealand in Mt. Aspiring National Park. This is most often done as a 3 day hike, but we only had time for one day as we had the Milford Track scheduled for the next day. Our guide, from Ultimate Hikes, picked us up at our hotel in Queenstown at 7:30 AM and we went on to pick up 2 others from Perth, Australia. Ultimate Hikes has a 20 year contract to manage the trails and huts/lodges in the area. Similar to what Xanterra does at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.
We were driven to the end of the trail and hiked to the lodge hikers on the 3 day hike would stay at on their final night. It was 5.5 up so 11 miles round trip. We followed a glacier feed stream almost the entire time. This trail is mostly in an alpine area but the greens were very green and the water in the streams was turquoise in color. |
