| partners | | A 6-vehicle convoy headed to the Martinez Cabin TH from our rendevous spot at Hwy 79 and Cottonwood Canyon Road. Our group of 11 included Ron & his daughter Taylor, Ben, Vince, Ken, John, Mike, Steve, Jan van der Meer (visiting from the Netherlands), Fabian and myself.
The 4WD trail to Martinez Cabin may test the limits of many stock vehicles. On this particular outing one of our vehicles torqued the engine compartment so severely as it negotiated a boulder field that the fan blades collided with the radiator. Ingenious field repair to leaking radiator made by Ken - WOW!http://hikearizona.com/phoZOOM.php?ZIP=37309We removed the rad and Ken pinched-off and rolled back the individual tubes blocking any links. Ron was able to drive all the way home with no noticeable difference in engine temperature!
We didn't make the planned side trip to the Coke Ovens due to the tenuous radiator situation. Should point out that Vince blew out his clutch master cylinder making a climb through a boulder field forcing him to drive in 2nd gear until the highway. We bump-started him in 4th gear to make the highway drive all the way home.
Group talked about a return visit with an overnight camp at Martinez Cabin with a complete loop hike to Martinez Mine and Mill, Columbia Mine, and Silver Belle Mine. |
