On this day I set out to find the Thor's Hammer pictographs. Following his "directions" (he never actually found them) and a bit of advice from Hippy, I took the descending path from just West of the pullout ... I do not recommend this route! It is a super-sketchy traverse across steep, loose side slopes and nasty vegetation - the very reason that Tomasi never reached the pictographs. Despite it's short length and seemingly benign location, it was one of the scariest things I've done in the Canyon. It took me about 25 minutes to get there. Once I reached the panel beneath the overhang, I was excited and fascinated. After enjoying the sights, I noticed that it looked like I could climb right up to the rim from the site very easily - which I did in about 30 seconds! So much easier than the path I took to get there! Once topside, I built a small cairn at the base of a tree where I topped out, and strolled back to the parking area in 3 - 4 minutes. Been back a few times since, and it's amazing to be able to visit such an awesome site so easily, in about 30 minutes, roundtrip from my house including driving and hiking time. |
