| partners | | After an earlier hike in the immediate area this morning with enticing views to the summit of this Peak 5051, we agreed that there was enough daylight left this afternoon to try this "off-trail" from the South side without a preloaded GPS planning track [ photo ] . From our previous day "Unnamed Canyon" hike which included some interesting zoom pics to the summit of Peak 5051, [ photo ] we felt confident we had located another lesser known hilltop ruins.
This sleeper peak turned out to be a little more involved (quite steep with some bushwhacking) than our distant view pics could confirm, but once we cleared the cliff face just below the summit area, the summit rewards for us were worth the extra effort with 360 degree views and also the full summit area had an ancient ruins wall circling it.
Larry describes it best-
On top we found a rock wall that completely surrounded the perimeter of the peak - about 80 ft in diameter. Sections of the wall were 4-5 feet high but had been much taller when built. There were also crumbled down walls outlining rectangular rooms for living quarters. It appeared that either pot hunters or archaeologists had dug out the interior of these rooms. We found no artifacts laying on the surface. This ruin appeared to have been a hilltop compound or fortress. A nice find and one not mentioned in Haury's 1934 report or Lange's 2006 "Echoes in the Canyons ...".
