Went up to the Kaibab National Forest near Williams for a few days to escape the Phoenix heat. I camped for two nights near Garland Prairie and hiked the Sycamore Rim Loop trail on one day. I had two days left in the plan so started driving more or less south on back roads following the west rim of Sycamore Canyon. This triplog and accompanying photos cover that drive and some of the scenery along the way. Many of the roads were not 4x4 and could be driven in a car but a couple spur roads I took out to the edge of the canyon needed clearance and low range gears (thus 4x4) to crawl over some rough rocky stretches. I spent one night camped at an area on the canyon rim called Lake Pocket and then continued on the next day connecting up with the Perkinsville Road (County Road 73). From the Verde River crossing near Perkinsville I drove on to Jerome. All the roads were gravel or dirt except for a stretch of the Perkinsville Road which was paved. There is a lot of beautiful country up there from the Ponderosa Pine forests in the Williams area to the Juniper studded meadows further south. I had not been here before and this trip opened up a whole new area of AZ to explore.

Of course the trip was not with out its odd encounters. While driving along a stretch of dirt road about 3 miles before crossing the Verde River I saw this guy come running out of the bushes on the side of the road carrying a shovel. He was yelling and motioning to a driver in a Dodge Caravan (minivan) to drive off the road through a drainage ditch. The woman driving the van looked flustered but blindly followed his directions and promptly got the van stuck in the ditch. I stopped to help and ask the guy what was going on. The old dude (older than me, so really old) was highly agitated and yelled "Don't you know this road is closed, there are signs everywhere, there's going to be a rally!" I asked what kind of rally and he looked at me like I was a complete ignoramus and said, "It's in the papers and on the radio, everyone knows about it!" Me, "Well is it a road rally with cars or bicycles?" He was finally able to spit out "Road rally and it starts at 4:00, you need to get off the road." Well it was only 11:30 am so I said "Think I'll hang around a while in case the lady needs some help getting her van out of the ditch." At that point he went back to the minivan and started yelling at the lady to put it in gear and gun it. She was so rattled she couldn't get the gear shift out of park which provoked more excited yelling from the old guy. He finally turned to me and asked if I knew what was wrong with her car. I suggested she try shifting out of park while pressing down on the foot brake. That solved the problem and the excited old guy yelled with glee "You've saved the day!" and ran up to me with arms spread like he was going to hug me. That was just not going to happen so I held out my hand and thankfully he stopped and shook it. He then continued to yell at the lady to gun it and drive further off the road. I suggested to him that she should get her van back on the road before it got damaged. He said, "Oh, I don't care about the van, we have to get it off the road before the rally starts." At that point I decided to get out of there, this guy was definitely not rational.
