| no partners | | After hiking the previous two days -- SP Crater and Cedar Mountain -- today was my wife's day. I thought she might like to do some antiquing, but instead she wanted to see Fall colors and visit the trading post in Cameron.
FR 418 isn't bad, but there are a few rather rocky sections that I would not attempt with less than an SUV. So, of course, we passed a car on the way. Perhaps he got lost on his way to the Inner Basin roadblock? The colors were indeed spectacular, and best of all we avoided the long wait. Kind of interesting that the color band was across mid-slope.
After the colors, it was the by now familiar, and starkly beautiful, drive up 89 to Cameron. We had lunch there -- Navajo Taco for me -- before starting the shopping. Mostly gifts for family, including dinosaur poo for our five year old grandaughter. Before we left, I had to take some pix of the Tanner Crossing, because I am a sucker for beautiful / interesting bridges.
We drove the whole Wupatki-Sunset Crater loop. The sky was quite blue, and the clouds puffy, and so I took lots of pix contrasting them against the walls of the ruins. One thing that threw me was the cattle "grates". The first one I slowed down for, then I realized it was not metal, but painted on the road. All the other "grates" on the loop were like that. Anyone know why?
Dinner at Brix, on north San Francsico, was excellent, and reasonably priced considering we drank a whole bottle of wine. Plus, I really enjoyed talking Scottish football with our waiter, who was from Edinburgh. |
