At the Park we just barely made it in time for the orientation lecture. We had gotten the last few spots on the hike! The ranger, Ken, was cool. We strapped on our snowshoes once we left the porch of the visitor's center. I've been snowshoeing before but I was pretty much one of the only ones. So some of the group did some test steps around the snow near the VC.
The ranger then led us out on the rim along a well-worn path. We stopped and discussed the history of the monument. From there we continued along to a river view point where he talked about the geology. We backtracked a bit and then climbed up into the uplands where we started talking about the biology of the park animals and how they survive the winter. We saw some cool tracks, including some from weasels!
Most of the trail had already been trodden on by previous trekkers but there was a section where there was a mad free-for-all across unbroken snow so we could get a sense of what cutting a trail was like. Then we were back on the groomed park road for the last little bit back to the Visitor's Center.

The trail the rangers take for this is down Oak Flat, backtrack a bit instead of going into the canyon, across the Uplands Trail, and then back to the road.
