| no partners | | It was a cool and overcast day and, except for 20-30 mph winds, perfect weather. The FR2551 portion of the trail from 525C/Black Tank was indeed a little boring, but once up on the ridge had some nice views of the surrounding terrain, including the Red Rock canyons to the east and Robber's Roost to the west. Spring Creek was flowing nicely, and crossing with dry feet was difficult but not impossible. The water lines on the rocks suggest that the creek level is falling steadily. I took my two dogs, and besides a couple of cactus punctures, no problems. I saw no other people on the trail. Signs of recent deer and elk movement were apparent, but no sightings. Lots of furry coyote scat everywhere. On the way back, spotted a large javelina near Black Tank, and about 20 ducks in the water. Hiked in 4 miles from Mooney trail head, far enough to get a feel for the place. Look forward to a return visit, possibly from the northern terminus of FR525, if access is available. |
