We'd read that you could get off the Colorado River there and that maybe it was somewhat of a beach, but we didn't really know what to expect. The trail started out as a sandy, beaten path but within 5 minutes we were entering the spires of the Doll House rock formation. Shortly thereafter, the trail becomes a steep descent with switchbacks. With little time left in our day we hiked about a 0.5 mile, to a point where we could really see the entire breadth of Spanish Bottom and several canyons that ended on either side of the Colorado. A sign along the way explained that Spanish Bottom is what's left of a sinkhole, but failed to note why it's called Spanish Bottom. If you complete the hike to the bottom it's 2.8 miles round-trip with a 1260 feet elevation loss/gain. |
