This was suppose to be the day I went to Samaniego Peak from Mount Lemmon but wasn't feeling quite up to par so I decided to do a shorter hike to see if I was coming down with something. This hike was along the northern end of the 50 Year Trail and The Chutes. My goal was to complete all the trails in the north section near Golder Ranch. From the road I started out on the 50 Year Trail heading north to where it connects up with an interconnect Trail that leads to the north end of the Chutes. I took the Chutes CCW to back to where I started and returned to the 50 Year Trail via an alternate route for The Chutes. The other trails I took I don't believe have names, at least I couldn't find them. These trails are mostly used by mountain bikes so they are fairly easy walking and do the usual wide gradual loops that are a little annoying when hiking especially when you are tired. Trails are easy to follow but there are a lot of trail intersections that are not signed. I discovered many of the trails by looking at Google Earth. Trails I still have to complete in this area are the Middle Gate Trail, Hidden canyon Trail, Cherry Spring Loop and the very last portion of the 50 Year Trail where it connects up to the Middle gate Trail. The closer I look at Google Earth the More I find. Finishing all these trails will be a good winter goal and will fill in the days when I want to do some hiking fairly close to home. Not real crowded on the trail, a pair of mountain bikers and about 10 hikers all in a cluster. I imagine the weekends are a lot busier.
From these trails there are good view of Pusch Ridge, Sutherland Ridge and all of Samaniego Ridge. Tucson Mountains to the southwest were also visible. This was a fairly easy 8 mile hike and I think I will give Samaniego Peak a try tomorrow. I will at least do the upper .5 mile portion of Sutherland Trail that I didn't finish last week and if I feel up to it I will continue on to the peak.
