This trail is not an official park trail but well worth the trip if you like old mines and history. The trail head is at the King Canyon Trail Head along Kinney road. Take the King Canyon Trail .9 miles to the junction with the Sendero Esperanza Trail. This is where the fun begins. The route is along the old Mile Wide Mine Road that is pretty much non existent now but still kind of visible. The road is overgrown with all sorts of plants that will stick you but can still be navigated with out much effort. I don't think much route finding skills are required but I could be wrong after reading about some people who got lost at seven falls near Tucson (I didn't think that was possible). Once at the mine take some time to explore. Probably a good idea to read up on the history of the mine first, I found it quite interesting. I do want to mention that if you visit leave things as you found them so others can enjoy. This mine is left pretty much as it was minus the wood structures and there are a lot of opportunities to get injured so be careful, the best way for this place to be put off limits is if someone gets injured. There is a barbed wire fence around the mine shaft for a reason. |
