I went to the Upper Peninsula for some camping and sightseeing with my mom and sister during my week back home in Michigan. Our family spent a lot of time in the U.P. growing up, whether is was multi week camping trips in the summer, or snowmobiling in the winter. On our first night we stayed at the very scenic Two Hearted River campground (an area written about and made famous by Ernest Hemingway). A devastating fire obliterated this area in 2012 and it was a little sad for us to see the area this way, but we still enjoyed our stay. Its funny, I never think of forest fires impacting Michigan, but I guess nowhere is immune to them.

We took a pleasant stroll along Lake Superior to the confluence of the Two Hearted River on the first night and enjoyed a pretty spectacular sunset, which seems to occur somewhere around 9:30 up there during the summertime. The next morning my mom and I hiked a short section of the North Country Trail. The North Country Trail is a national scenic trail that starts in New York and passes through seven states on its way to North Dakota. From a quick glance, it appears that its Upper Peninsula portion may be particularly scenic, with the trail passing through Tahquamenon Falls, the Two Hearted River area, Pictured Rocks and the Porcupine Mountains. Despite the obvious fire damage, I still enjoyed this short little section of trail. In particular, the spot where we made our way to the lake shore near our turn around point was particularly scenic. It was a little bittersweet to see the area destroyed, but recovery should come relatively quickly in this area. Especially, with the reported 4.4 million jack pines seedlings planted in the burn zone. After our little morning hike and packing up camp we headed to the Crisp Point Lighthouse another must see place in the area.
