| no partners | | I've been putting this one off for awhile now, but yesterday's weather said, "GO!"
I had been to the basin before, but never ventured up to the Flatiron thinking it was for mountaineers, tri-atheletes and crazy people only. True, this is a strenuous hike, but anyone with 2 good arms and legs and a permission slip from their cardiologist can do this one. I was really surprised at how many people were out there on a Thursday. I counted 15 others who made it to the top, and half of them were over 50. I didn't think the climbing was as difficult as some report, but the trip down is a real knee-buster. The trickiest part of the hike for me was trying to come back down the slick rock. I ended up doing a somewhat-less-than-cool 5-point slide most of the way (I'm glad no one was looking)!
Standing up on top is a feeling you must experience, so get out there before it gets too hot. Wear good gloves and bring plenty of water. You can do it!
**Update 4.12.08:
My adrenaline fueled description of this hike would really be incomplete if I didn't confess that nearly 2 days later, I still hurt from the hair down! |
