| no partners | | | On my last day in Las Vegas just before I headed back to Tucson we did a short 4 mile loop hike on the Kraft Boulder Trail around what they call Kraft Mountain. This Mountain or hill is on the north side of Calico Basin and is a favorite place for rock climbers. The trail starts out like a highway at the Calico Basin Trail Head and continues east on the Kraft Mountain Loop Trail to skirt around Kraft Mountain, then continues up a canyon that is the drainage for the south side of Turtlehead Mountain on the Lower Gateway Canyon Trail. About a third of this loop hike follows along this creek. A little bit of rock hopping and route finding will be required in this canyon as you approach a few blockages in the creek. Not a place to be during flash floods. At a certain point along the creek you head up hill to Connect up with the Hell Hill Trail that will cross over Pink Goblin Pass on the west side of Kraft Mountain that leads back to the trail head. (Check for location of this point on the GPS route). The other option is to continue up stream on the lower Gateway Canyon Trail to the junction with the Rattlesnake Trail then take the Hell Hill Trail to the pass. Once out of the creek there is a well defined trail the rest of the way back. This trail is probably maintained by the number of rock climbers using it to access the climbing area. Of the three days of hiking here I think this was the most fun. I forgot how fun rock scrambling can be. |
