I had contemplated taking Slate Canyon as a starting point for my ascent of Provo Peak last year, but ultimately decided to head up the Slide Canyon route, which is just one drainage to the north of Slate. The two eventually intersect at a saddle, but I didn't have time to make it up to that junction on this morning. Not only was time a factor, but the snow was still pretty solid about 2 miles in. My friend and I made it to a campground about .5 mi. from the junction before turning around. There was a fair amount of water draining through the canyon, which will only build as the snowpack continues to melt. I assume this one is very beautiful in the spring/summer/autumn when the leaves are out. It's also a great workout hike, averaging 800 ft. AEG per mile on way up (and closer to 1000 if you make it up to the junction, which is straight up from the campground area). |
