| no partners | | The Pecos Wilderness has been on the back of my mind since I made my first trip there last Memorial Day Weekend. My interest was further piqued after another HAZ group went out there for a pretty nice backpack as well. Almost a year to the date, the timing was finally right for a return. I kicked off my return to the area with a day hike up to the Trampas Lakes.
The trail up to the lakes (Trampas Lakes Trail #31) was in excellent shape and well taken care of. It runs along a scenic creek and through a healthy alpine forest. Snow started to appear on the trail about three miles in and soon after the hike became exclusively a snow hike. I put on micro spikes and some taller alpine gaiters to mitigate the snow and had no real issues. Both the Trampas Lakes were entirely frozen over and still snow covered. The ice remained strong enough for us to comfortably venture out on to, but it did make a few creaking and groaning noised that were enough to spook both Blanco and myself back to shore. After spending several minutes enjoying the solitude and tranquility of the frozen lakes, we headed back down the trail. As was expected, there was more post-holing on the way back as the warmer temperatures had softened up the snow considerably. The trail got a little busy the final few miles and all of the campsites along the trail and creek were occupied by my return. Someone noted to me that the lakes tends to get pretty busy Memorial Day Weekend. I guess snow bucked that trend this year. |
