The nasty weather didn’t stop me either day and both times returned back to the truck soaking wet, cold, tired and happy.
On Friday evening the storm seemed to have subsided a bit as I proceeded to venture further down the steep slopes but I should have known better because soon it started to snow again and instead of spitting it truly began to come down and put a solid 3” of powder on the ground within the hour.
Navigating back out of the rugged steep country in the midst of a snowstorm went well besides a section of a nearly impenetrable manzanita fortress that I couldn’t find my way around.
With visibility at minimal and darkness closing in I didn’t waste anytime and took my pack off and crawled right through it with the toughest and best dog in the world following me from behind.
Took a solid fall backwards fighting up the dense sections of vegetation and had to take off my pack once again as the antlers and pack were truly stuck and wedged in between the brush I fell back on top of.
Thankfully after that it was all smooth sailing and made for a memorable, humbling and truly epic time in the backcountry I’ll never forget. |
