Put in at Goldfield and paddled to GR as the sun set. I thought we had started a little bit too early as the sun was high and bright to start, but shade was abundant by the time we reached Coon Bluff and more or less constant after that. We lingered on the water for a bit at the end to enjoy the colors.
I stopped at one point for a pee break and paddled into a sandy berm. As I got out, a dback decided I had crossed the threshold and made a polite rattle so I would notice it. I had literally beached my kayak a foot from where it was laying. As I peed a few feet away it slowly slithered under some roots for shelter. This is by far the largest dback I have ever seen. Five feet is not an exaggeration. It was so fat and healthy looking I wondered if it was a gravid female. No pix until I got back in the boat as I would have had to reach over it to get to my phone, and peeing was a priority at that particular moment.
Spotted another "mystery light". This one is close enough to town that I'll commission one of you to go find it. It's on the rez though, which should complicate things. You'll find it at the summit of "I'd Like to Buy a Vowel [Schlechts] Butte" |
