| no partners | | Checking the discharge out of Steward Mountain Dam on Saturday, My #3 son and I decided to give the Lower Salt River one more go before the water gets too low.
I was expecting a total Zoo at Granite Reef when we dropped the car at 6:30am, but it was not busy at all. The crowd at the Water Users was busy, but not as bad either.
We pushed off about 7am. The weather was nice, not too hot, nor as humid as it has been. Lots of mosquitos in the beginning.
The flow was good and there were a good number of paddleboarders and other kayakers out. We came across our first band of horses right past the bridge at Blue Point.
We saw a few more bands heading towards the Goldfield exit point, but none after that. The crowds at Coon Bluff were gathering. Lots of people out fishing and enjoying the day. Phon D Sutton was a zoo. The rocks and shoreline were packed with people. I could smell some pretty tasty BBQ going for sure. After that, we saw no humans until we made it Granite Reef.
The eelgrass was really thick approaching the end. It made for slower speed and lots of slimey bits hanging on the paddles. The horses are slacking, not eating enough of it, I guess.
The trip down was nice and the kayak we rented was speedy. We made it in less than 3 hours. We passed up every paddleboarder and kayak we came across and nobody passed us up all day. My last trip had a couple of capsizes and ruined/lost electronics. That was on a "sit on" kayak. Today was a more stable "sit in" model. I know which one to bring for future trips.
Heading back up to get the truck at the Water Users lot afterwards, it was busy, but not as bad as last time. Lots of people out.
My son and I had a great day together. Gotta love that this river, with all of the beauty around it, the horses and the weather. We are truly blessed to live here. |
