After a surprisingly pleasant stop for some hot springs near Wickiup, we headed to the Utah Hills to climb some desert limestone in frigid windy temps. The climbing was great, but the cold temps were brutal, so we then sought refuge on BLM land and within the confines of a newly established national monument.
The area offered some pretty amazing petroglyphs, which were highlighted by the, "falling man" and newspaper rock. Inexplicably shaped and weathered sandstone ruled the day for awhile and after miles of rough road, it was off to the little traveled Mormon Mountains for a half hearted attempt at climbing on Sunday.
The wall was in the shade, the limestone was even sharper and the wind was howling. I climbed three bolts on a 5.8 route and called it a day. Katie finished the route for the lead and then we left. The climbing area had promise and it was a scenic setting, but I was done with the cold by that point.
On the way home, I made a half hearted attempt at accessing Mt. Tipton Wilderness, but turned around on a road rougher than what I had the ambition for. To be continued. |
