This was a pretty spectacular low key canyoneering route for us and it was as fulfilling as just about anything I can think of in recent memory. I have no idea how the permit system works, or what you do to get one, Katie and I were invited on the trip.

We started at the upper trailhead just before 6:30 a.m. and shortly after that we were beginning our magical descent down the ancient hardened sand dunes that make up the spectacular Navajo Sandstone layer found throughout Zion. There was a short fun class four scramble to reach the canyon floor and then the fun began.

The Canyon was probably about as scenic of a canyon, as I have passed through. The attractions seemed to be non stop, from narrow walls, to subalpine firs, tall conifers, carved waterways, gushing springs at the base of the sandstone and idyllic, cold, clear water swimmers. The canyon really had it all.

In terms of the technical aspects, the raps were all bolted, short in length and not overly technical in nature. I do not know enough about canyoneering to make a definitive statement, but I would think this would fall under the category of a beginner canyon.

We did not see any people until we made our final rap, which placed us at perhaps the highlight of the day, the Subway. After a quick break at one of the few spots in the canyon the sun was reaching, we parted ways with the other two people in our group, so we could finish at a quicker pace and begin our drive back to Phoenix.

I had no idea what to expect when we accepted the invite and even had some apprehensions about the crowds etc, but I left with exceeded expectations and awestruck. An amazing location and a fun and engaging way to see a canyon.
