The drive to the trailhead began the theme for the day... although the surface was hard packed gravel in great shape, the incessant winding and doubling back made an expected quick drive seem like it would never end.
Continuing on that theme the hike seemed to me it would never end. The elevation profile of the hike didn't appear anything like our first two hikes on this trip, but almost every ascent or descent was steeper than anticipated, but in truth it wasn't distance or elevation gain that made it drag on but hip pain, my constant companion for the day. (Unfortunately this will be a recurring issue for the next four hikes)
I don't recall a great deal of the hike so I'll leave it to the photos to tell the story. We went just far enough to a nice viewpoint of the falls where we took our lunch break. Since it was point where further travel by horses was not recommended due to treacherous terrain, we headed back.
One thing I do recall in greater detail that I'd care to on the return trip, was the number of hikers with dogs (as I mentioned in a previous triplog, dragging-leash-on-dogs rather than dogs-on-leash) along with how unprepared the majority of them were... not enough/no water, no clue how far it is to the falls, or how rough last two climbs on the return trip will feel like. But I guess it's what is expected for the hikes rated 'Easy' on the Pagosa Springs hikes site. |
