This was another one of my favorites of this trip and probably both of my trips to the Bitterroots. This is a relatively popular hike and Missoula is not far, however, we did not see many people on the trail as inclement weather was forecasted and the trail had just “cleared” of snow within days.

A pleasant white bark pine forest sets the tone in the beginning, but then you start to reach the weather stunted shrubs and trees just below the tree line. We did hit a significant section of well packed snow, but it did not prove to be much of an obstacle and route finding was fine. As usual, Dot did not mind the snow. The final push to the summit is pretty stunning and the views only get better. I saw some significant clouds rolling in, so we kept our stay short, but the impression had been made. An amazing vantage point to see the Bitterroots from. Alpine lakes, endless rolling hills, steep drainages, jagged peaks and the civilized valley below. The decommissioned lookout on the summit was closed up and not accessible. We returned the way we came and made good time back to the trailhead.

Happy belated Fourth of July!
