This was my 3rd trip to this White Canyon-AZT Passage#16 to complete this ~25 mile one way segment between it's two ends at the Kelvin Bridge-Gila River(south end) and the Tonto NF Boundary(northwest end). So, how can someone make three trips here, hike a total of 51 miles, and still be short by ~2 miles to complete this AZT Passage?? Answer: Do it my way each time as an in & out day hike instead of a backpack trip and get carried away each trip with exploratory hiking because the area is so scenic and enjoyable to hike in!

This 3rd day hike (a loop with spurs), topohiker and I started from one of a number of possible AZT Passage#16 TH access points at the Battle Axe Road intersection with the old corral area. From here we hiked to the south end of Battle Axe Road, then connected SW with a very scenic and rugged unnamed canyon drainage that opened into what the AZT Assoc calls wash#2. Our need was to hike to the south end of this wash#2 to connect our AZT ending point from our previous 12/13/08 trip log. From this point we were to hike north back up wash#2 to finally connect with the AZT again at the north end of Walnut Canyon at the Artesian Well area. Well, we got carried away and decided to do some additional exploratory hiking going further west and south along the Gila River then back to this wash#2. By the time we reached the Artesian Well area it was 2:30pm and we still had a number of miles to hike to complete the AZT Passage#16 segment to connect the northwest end where we had left off on our first hike and trip log of 4/19/08.

Please view my posted GPS ROUTE and PIC SET (with detailed captions) for a walk through of this most enjoyable and amAZing area to hike! :D
