| no partners | | I've been to Big Lake Campground in the Oregon Cascade Mountains near Santiam Pass in late September about 4 times over the last 5 years It's an annual trip here for a reunion with 11 guys I went with on an Owyhee River Rafting trip in May 2017. I usually do a day or two of short hikes while there and have been intrigued by the possibility of climbing to the top of nearby Hayrick Butte. I've never been able to find any info on possible hiking routes to the top so finally plotted a gps planning route on Google Earth that looked doable, at least from the satellite view.
I started the hike from my campsite on the north shore of Big Lake in the large campground that extends from the north end along the west side of the lake. Most of the hike was on forest roads and off-road vehicle recreation trails to reach the starting point for hiking up the northeast side of the Butte. The route started out with a gentle slope but quickly became very steep as it ascended through a forest of large moss-covered Douglas Fir. I ended up turning around about 2/3 of the way to the top. The route looked doable, but it was getting steep enough that I didn't feel safe doing it solo. So it was back to camp to wait for my friends to show up. |
