The Cactus Butte Trail (TR60) is a rugged and remote hike into a seldom seen area of the Sierra Anchas. This hike has both high and low points. The high points were the killer views and a great summit. The low points were the sharp rocks and numerous cacti. The name of the trail is rather ironic. Its the day after the hike and I am still picking cactus thorns out of my legs and the nasty sharp rocks hidden in the deep grass heading to the final summit were a real pain in the #%$. Ouch! For me, the high points out weighed the lows. I truly love a good backcountry hike into a remote area and that is what TR60 is. When I finally got back to the truck my rating was a 3, but with a day to reflect and view my photos I had to give it a strong 4 due to my love for rugged hikes. Throw in a sweet riparian area or a nice historic cabin and I will typically give the hike a 5.
On this hike I joined up with Hank (Grasshopper) for the first time. I thoroughly enjoyed our hike together. Hank is transparent and genuine. There were never any uncomfortable moments and I always knew whom I was dealing with. Those are valued traits. I was truly impressed with his ability to tackle a tuff backcountry hike. Wow! I can only hope that I am in as good of shape as he is when I am in my 60's. |
