Since that time usually I end my 2-4x weekly mountain-bike rides by picking up whatever trash has accumulated. By doing it so frequently I can keep "our section" of Bush Highway looking beautiful. Usually the amount is small enough I'm able to fit the trash into a small grocery-store plastic bag. On Friday I did one last pre-holiday cleanup in anticipation of the all the traffic over the Memorial Day weekend.
Just before my ride today (Tuesday) I drove along the mile to see what I was in store for, stopping only to pick up three items too large to handle while on my bike, empty cartons of beer and/or soda, one being a 24-pack.
After parking at my usual spot at the Coon Bluff Road/Bush Highway intersection I set off on my usual route but at just under 4 miles I realized I better turn back and get started on the trash removal before it got too hot.
But in that short distance I encountered a large couch and love seat that someone had dumped at the Phon D Sutton 'horse-staging' parking lot. They actually looked in good enough condition to have been donated, but I guess that's too much work... "Let's just dump it out in the open."
It was a good thing I had plenty of plastic bags in my pack as I filled three plastic bags as well as a fabric bag. It got to be more of a challenge than anticipated with all three bags hanging on my handlebars, as well as a stray wheel cover. Once back at the car I dumped everything on the ground for a quick photo before placing it in filling a large orange bag provided to me by Maricopa County DOT.
Most prominent in the photo was a T-shirt emblazoned with the words "PRETTY GOOD AT BAD DECISIONS" which pretty much says it all... in this case the bad decision being, "Let's show how much we (dis)respect our county/state/country by trashing it on the way home". |
