| partners | | goat canyon trestle has been on john's wish list for awhile
unsure of being able to make the drive for the montera palms route, he found a good source of information for hiking in from jacumba hot springs
apparently this is the most popular way to get there, according to hikingguy.com
a bit of a scenic drive from tamarisk grove campground and we got started around 0900
there is a use trail parallel to the tracks the entire way
nice views into carrizo gorge
i've always liked the bouldery terrain around jacumba
crossed a couple of bridges early on, and came to the first set of graffiti covered passenger cars
we checked out a lot of oddities on the hike in
there are eleven tunnels
two of them were gated shut and required a bypass, one was filled in with rubble
we walked through eight of them, one was a half mile long
headlamps were helpful
there is a second set of passenger cars that were burned a few miles in
there are several bridges to cross
a few of those have rotted boards and loose grating
i wasn't real comfortable on a few of the crossings, but the tunnels were fun
goat canyon trestle comes into view just after tunnel 15 and it's an impressive sight
john crossed over and checked out the perspective from the north side
i went about one third of the way
a worthy destination
we took a snack break, took some photos and headed back
didn't stop as much on the return
we did find a shorter bypass for the first tunnel
saw five people
took a different scenic route back to the campground, stopping for burger and fries in julian
fun day, very interesting hike, a lot of history
thanks john, great choice! |
