| partners | | Day two of our Anza Borrego trip and the main event for me. We chose the southern route because of ease of access to start the hike. The other two options looked like 4WD might be necessary. This route is the longest but maybe the easiest of the three.
There are 11 tunnels along the "impossible railway" to the big redwood trestle. Two are bypassed and another is caved in. There are also a number of smaller trestles to navigate. Two well painted passenger trains are passed along the way. The rails themselves ranged in production dates from 1917 to 1944 that I noticed.
We had a lot of fun checking out the multitude of stuff along the way. Interesting.
The return hike went much faster because we didn't stop much like we did on the way in. We also took the shorter bypass around tunnel #5 on the west side (recommended).
