Note: Michael Berry made contact with the property owner weeks ago to make arrangements for us to do this hike since we needed to cross some private property to get to the AZ state trust land. The entire hike is on AZ state trust land. One of the challenges was accessing this land. Thank you to Kali and family for allowing us to hike this mountain.

** If you would like a copy of our group photo, please PM me and I will send it to you.

It was a great turnout. We had a total of 8 hikers show up at 8 AM at the starting point. Kali was nice enough to meet us at the gate and collect our permission forms and make sure we all had AZ state trust land permits. We all drove about 1/2 mile through the gate and parked off the road somewhere.

We followed an old 4x4 road for the first 3/4 mile of the hike. After that, we aimed for a lower saddle and hiked up to it where we picked up the main ridgeline. From the main ridgeline we just went up zig-zagging around any rocky areas. Cattle are raised all around this area so there was not a lot of brush. We saw hardly any prickly pear, no saguaros, but there was some agave, some ocotillo, some oak and manzanita.

At the summit, we found a registry which we all signed. There were some concrete slabs that must have been used as a foundation for an old radio tower or fire lookout tower. There were also 2 folding chairs that were left up there for anyone to use. I used my camera to take a group photo. I had part of my lunch and all of us spent about an hour at the summit. We also found the US survey marker at the top which was placed there in 1935. We looked North toward May West peak, an area that we have not been to yet.

After that we decided to head down, but this time we felt it would be better if we went to the lower saddle which was further to the Southwest. At that saddle there was a fence and an old wooden doorway. Brian and I found some cattle trails zig-zagging down from there and a trail heading back in the direction we came from. There were a few cairns along the way. We stopped at a certain point to finish our lunch and enjoy the breeze and perfect weather. Since we were close to the highway, we were able to check & send messages. We took our time on the way down after 3 solid days of hiking and took many breaks. Near the bottom we walked over to check out some of the massive boulders and rock formations that this area is known for.

Stats:
-------
Total distance (round trip): 4.84 miles
AEG: 1,382 feet
Moving time: 1 hr 20 mins (ascent), 1 hr 30 mins (descent) with several breaks along the way

Driving Directions:
--------------------
take I-10 East toward Benson
about 13 miles East of Benson, take exit 318 for Dragoon Road
once off the exit, turn left onto Dragoon road, go under the highway and look for a pullout on the right side of the road.
This land is private, however, we contacted the property owner several days in advance and they were very accommodating, meeting us at the gate and allowing us to drive through the private land in order to get to the AZ state trust land.
I believe the first 0.1 miles of road is on private land, and after that we were on AZ state trust land.
Thank you to Kali and family for allowing us to access this land.
