In this case we began our first hike of the day from a wide spot along the shoulder of UT Highway 95. With all the bare slick-rock in the area, we figured we could avoid much of the trudging through wet/muddy washes.
The destination for this hike was the South end of Poseys Trail Road, which we easily reached with the Cherokee back in May 2013, but with the road likely being impassible for days or more that wasn't an option.
The plan today was to hike almost directly West up the dry bare slick-rock to the top of The Comb for a nice overlook scene then follow the ridge North until reaching Poseys Trail Road, along with a short jaunt up to the summit of Peak 5649.
It began easy enough, simply heading up the dry slick-rock toward the ridge, but as we scanned the route toward Poseys Trail we saw there was a deep drainage with steep walls on both sides. Neither side offered any halfway reasonable descent/ascent routes so we backtracked to the highway, walked 1/4 mile North before heading back up the slick-rock. This is when we encountered the only wildlife of the hike... a deer jumping over a fence, one which we would need to go over or under. I went over while Tracy went under.
From there on it was simply a matter of scanning the terrain ahead, take an educated guess at the next few hundred yards and adjust accordingly.
Upon reaching the top of the Comb Ridge we were greeted with an awesome panorama. From there it would have be nice to simply follow the ridge North, but again the steep cliff-like sections meant dropping down to continue on.
After a few ups and downs we encountered a number of rock cairns which were marking a trail, so we followed it until it reached the end, which was on a wide 'shelf' immediately below Peak 5649. Based on the number of fire rings in the area and the trail up to it, the shelf seems to be visited somewhat frequently.
(Encountering the cairned trail farther down-slope on our return trip, we followed it for all of 20-30 feet before seeing it lead well away from the direction we wanted to go.)
After taking in the Western views and the obligatory photos we backtracked just far enough to avoid a cliff ascent to reach the end of Poseys Trail Road. All there is at the end of Poseys Trail Road is a turnaround circle so we took the quick jaunt to the summit of Peak 5649. A few photos from the summit and we set off on the return trip.
I had added a few waypoints on they way up, but while stopped for a short lunch break we saw items of interest away from our ascent route and decided to skip the waypoints and just wander in the general direction of the highway. It turned out to be a much easier route, with almost all slick-rock and almost no traipsing through sandy washes. All in all, it was a pleasant hike with temps 63-70°. |
