I find the gnarly huge pine trees at this 10,000+ ft elevation to be fascinating. I hiked a lollipop loop in the Cottonwood Lakes Basin in 2014 [ photoset ] . After returning from that hike, I did some research on the internet and tentatively identified those trees as Foxtail Pine (Pinus balfouriana, subspecies austrina) that are related to the Bristlecone Pine. They are found at an elev of 7500-11500 ft in the Sierra Nevada and are limited to the area around Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. |
