| partners | | We headed to the heart of West Clear Creek, what Joe calls The White Box & Hanging gardens. He almost lost the wheels of his truck driving in, it was a crazy rough road! The water was cool and the views were breathtaking.
We didn't notice thunder the clouds roll in until it was too late, the sky was dark and the atmosphere was eerie storm yellow.
"We probably should just try to climb out of the canyon; if we go back that same way and there happens to be a flash flood, we will die."
Go back? I was surprised, All I was thinking was we needed to find shelter, the storm was as wide as the sky! But getting out of a canyon in a rainstorm was later an obvious decision. It took about leisurely 4 hrs(?) to get there, but I thought that maybe if we hurried we could beat it. The rain was already falling as we hurried up stream through the canyon. As the thunder crashed I started to think it was a crazy mistake, I began to cruise upstream over the rocks, through the pools with Joe right behind me. I silently asked God to hold off the storm but if he decided to take me, at least I'd go out hiking!
We hurried along and seemed to stay just ahead of the huge rain drops! It's surprising what you can accomplish when you really think you may be in danger; we reached the beginning in record timing! As we reached the truck the sky was still dark, but the rain held off long enough for us to drive out of what would have become an impossible mud pie.
Maybe it never would have developed into a major storm or maybe God had heard me... Either way, for me, it was intense. |
