Actual time for the Meadow Trail portion, however, was just one hour, hence that time is shown in the details. This was the first of what we hope will be many lovely day hikes this year! Had a bit of trouble actually finding the trailhead, perhaps partly due to the fact that the trail sign is completely hidden behind brush. For those who might be as dense as we were, the trail starts right next to that huge chainlinked area, not at the end of the parking lot as we first thought. Once we found the trail, it was very well marked, and we enjoyed the shade as we trekked through sunflowers and ferns amid the tall trees. Saw a Mourning Cloak, Painted Lady, and Pipevine Swallowtail on the journey. The burn area is beautiful in its own right, with tall skeleton trees through which you can see a great view. The old growth pine trees in the second half of the trail are amazing! It took all 4 of us to hug one. We did not return back along the Meadow Trail, but instead made the loop with the Mt Lemmon Trail #5 for the return, where we encountered a view that rendered us all speechless, as we took the mini trail down to the rocky outcropping and stood on the edge of the world! Waved hello to a couple brave souls who were on the tall rocks across the way and then continued on our hike, passing more burn area but still lovely with new growth, some wildflowers, and a flock of goldfinches that enjoy roosting in the bare trees. The last stretch of the hike proved to be tiring, particularly for the younger set, but everyone agreed we will do this hike again! |
